Indiana University Language Club

The Language Club held its first regular meeting October 19, 1920.

Members consisted of faculty members from the language departments as well as other liberal arts departments. Members met monthly throughout the school year, at first at each others' homes and later at different locations on the Bloomington campus. Meetings included a presentation by one or two club members or guests, generally on topics of literature or the arts followed by a group discussion of the presentation, reports on language association meetings members had attended, and discussion of departmental issues.

The Language Club was first organized in Kirkwood Hall and held its first regular meeting on October 19, 1920. It consisted of faculty members from the language departments as well as other liberal arts departments and included over the years Ralph Collins, Robert Ittner, Guido Stempel, and Stith Thompson. Members met monthly throughout the school year, at first at each others' homes and later at different locations on the Bloomington campus. Meetings included a presentation by one or two club members or guests, generally on topics of literature or the arts, followed by a group discussion of the presentation, reports on language association meetings members had attended, and discussion of departmental issues.

Not much else is known about the Language Club because as a faculty organization, the Language Club was not included in the Arbutus, and in the entirety of its existence was mentioned in just two brief articles in the Indiana Daily Student. These IDS articles merely listed the club's elected officers for 1929-30 and 1935-36.
