David McPhail was born June 30, 1940, in Newburyport, Mass. As a young man he had a factory job, which he found depressing. For a while he also played guitar (he knew four chords) in a rock band. Eventually he attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, which led to his becoming an author and illustrator of children's books. Most of the books he has written are self-illustrated. His first series character to become will known was Pig Pig, which is only one of a number of animal characters that he developed. Another favorite character is Edward, a small boy. His books are characterized by vivid detail, lively action, and humorous characters. McPhail has received numerous awards and honors for his work.
