Frederick W. Schroeder lived in Flushing, N.Y. with his father, John Frederick Schroeder, an Episcopal clergyman and scholar, his mother, Cornelia Boardman Schroeder, daughter of U.S. Senator Elijah Boardman of Connecticut, and siblings at the girls school, St. Ann's Hall, his father established and ran in Flushing, 1839-1846. Frederick became an ordained minister and deacon in 1852.
