Dorothy Johansen was born in Seaside, Oregon, in 1904, attending Astoria High School and Oregon Normal School in Monmouth (Western Oregon University). She taught school for 8 years before entering Reed College. Immediately after graduating in 1933, she was hired as a graduate assistant in the Reed College history department and later became an instructor. At the same time, she pursued advanced degrees in history from the University of Washington, earning her doctorate in 1941. She was active as a teacher in the community beyond Reed, a board member in both the Portland public schools and the Oregon Historical Society, and member of many other public-minded groups. She wrote prolifically about Pacific Northwest history, including her book, Empire of the Columbia (1957), co-authored by Charles Gates. She retired as a history and humanities professor in 1969, but continued on as the college archivist until 1984. She died in 1999.
