Seufert Bros. Company.

Hide Profile

The Seufert Bros. Company was founded in 1884 in The Dalles, Oregon by brothers Francis A. and Theodore J. Seufert. The Seuferts had migrated to Oregon from New York in 1882. In 1886 they purchased the Whitcomb Fishery interests near The Dalles, including a small salmon cannery, to which they added a fish house and ice house. From these beginnings, they developed a business which dominated the fish canning and packing business on the Columbia River for many years. Francis A. Seufert, Jr., assumed control of the company after the death of his father. The construction of The Dalles Dam terminated the company's operations in 1954. The company also developed a successful fruit and vegetables canning operation. A successor company, Francis A. Seufert and Company, continued operations after 1954.
