In 1951, D. E. Henderson, Head of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering in the School (College) of Engineering, with the support of Dean J. H. Lampe, petitioned Dean E. L. Cloyd to allow NC State to form an Alpha Pi Mu chapter. The chapter was granted at NC State sometime between 1951 and 1956 (with the first initiations taking place in 1956). The chapter was still active as of 2008.

The Society of Alpha Pi Mu, a national honorary society for the field of Industrial Engineering, was first organized at Georgia Tech University in 1949. By 1951, Alpha Pi Mu had 10 or 12 chapters at universities throughout the East and Midwest, and D. E. Henderson, Head of the Dept. of Industrial Engineering in the School (College) of Engineering, with the support of Dean J. H. Lampe, petitioned Dean E. L. Cloyd to allow NC State to also form a chapter. The chapter was granted at NC State sometime between 1951 and 1956 (with the first initiations taking place in 1956). The chapter was still active as of 2008.

The Society of Alpha Pi Mu is highly recognized throughout the field of Industrial Engineering (IE), promoting those students at the top of thier IE courses. The Society also works to promote the field of Industrial Engineering, and to introduce IE students to other members of the Society.
