Ritterband, Jacob Solis.
Solomon Nunes Carvalho, painter and photographer of Jewish Spanish-Portuguese descent, accompanied John C. Frémont in 1853-53 during his fifth and final effort to find a central western railroad route to the Pacific. In 1857 Carvalho published a personal account of his journey entitled Incidents of Travel and Adventure in the Far West: with Col. Frémont's Last Expedition Across the Rocky Mountains (New York: Derby & Jackson, 1857).
