Nancy Bayley was born September 28, 1899 in The Dalles, Oregon. She received the B. S. in 1922 and the M. S. in 1924, both from the University of Washington, and earned her PhD at the University of Iowa in 1926.

Bayley was a prominent child psychologist in her own right. She was closely involved with the Berkeley Growth Study. She also created several assessments to be used with infants and children, including the Bayley growth scale. Her research utilized psychophysiological data, such as the galvanic skin response, and markers such as height and weight.

Bayley was active in a number of associations, and served in leadership roles for many of these, including as president of the American Psychological Association (APA). In 1966 Bayley became the first woman to receive the APA's Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Bayley died in 1994 in Carmel, CA.
