Katherine Zecca (b. 1954) received her associate's degree in Applied Arts in 1988. She was employed with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle, Washington, from 1988 to 2000. She worked as a graphic designer and scientific illustrator for NOAA, until resigning to become a free-lance illustrator in 2000. She has written and illustrated five non-fiction nature books for children, including "A Puffin's Year", "River Song", "In My Backyard", "Strange Life of the Hermit Crab", and "Why Puppies Do That".
