John Mason Boutwell, a mining geologist, held a master's degree from Harvard (1896) and taught in its Geology Department from 1896-1900. He was employed by the United States Geological Survey, 1896-1908, and from 1908 until he retired in the late 1950s, was a consulting mining geologist. His clients included Phelps, Dodge & Company, Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation, Peru, and Silver King Coalition Mining Company. He wrote on economic geological topics, and specialized in the geology of ore deposition.
