Joseph M. Kellogg received his Bachelors degree in Architecture in 1909 and his Masters degree in Architecture in 1912 from Cornell University. He joined the faculty of the University of Kansas in 1922 as a Professor of Architectural Design. Kellogg retired in 1956 and died in 1963.

Captain Joseph Kellogg (1812-1903) was a millwright, shipbuilder and promoter who was born in Canada.

He came to Oregon via ocean route in 1848 and after locating a claim beside Whitcomb, he helped found the town of Milwaukie, Oregon. In partership with Whitcomb and William Torrence, he was one of a firm which built the river schooner, Lot Whitcomb and other craft and constructed a local mill. He built Standard Flour Mills at Milwaukie. He became a member of Peoples Transportation Company. In 1870 he helped form the Willamette Transportation Company. Soon after he sold his interests in the company and formed the Joseph Kellogg Transportion Company.
