Leota Bates (Dec. 17, 1894-Feb. 13, 1976) was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. John H. Cornelius. She graduated from Central State Teacher's College, now Central Michigan University in 1914. Leota taught piano, organ, and was choir director and organist of the First United Methodist Church (FUMC), Belding (Mich.). She was active in music groups throughout Michigan. Leota was a member of the FUMC, the Women's Literary Club, the Washington Club, American Legion Auxiliary, the Federation of Women's Clubs, and a life member of Doric Chapter 75, Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Eston Bates died in 1956. Leota was survived by her daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Mary Helen) Feighner. (Information from the collection.).
