In 1946 the Audio-Visual Aids Committee, under the chairmanship of Louis Slock, issued what was probably the first catalog of audio-visual equipment and material available at the Eau Claire State Teachers College. In 1947 the Education Department made audio-visual training a requirement for every student in teacher education. By 1955 a faculty member had been appointed Director of Audio-Visual Aids to assist the faculty in preparing film orders and evaluating equipment. A full-fledged Audio-Visual Services department existed by the early 1960's and was responsible for audio-visual instruction, equipment purchase and distribution, offset duplicating, production of educational materials, and photographic services. The department's name was changed to the Media Development Center in 1971 as part of an administrative reorganization which accompanied the creation of the University of Wisconsin System.
