Roberts was born in Pittsburgh in 1918; served in the 21st Infantry, U.S. Army in 1940; advanced through grades to major by 1944; discharged, 1945; member U.S. Army Reserve, 1946-1970; commander 99th Army Reserve at Pittsburgh, 1967-1970; promoted to major general in 1971; chairman of Committee for Free Afghanistan, 1983-; and awarded Bronze Star.
