Capt. John Curtis (1800?-1869) was the son of Capt. John and Mercy Curtis of Portland, Me. Capt. John, Sr. had been lost at sea in 1812 while in command of the privateer "Dartmouth." Capt. John, Jr. was a successful master mariner. He married, on 22 May 1823, Statira R., daughter of Ai and Eunice Staples, of Gorham, Me.

Samuel Whittlesey was born December 1775 at South Farms, Connecticut and graduated from Yale College in 1803. He was minister at New Preston, Connecticut, for ten years, then moved to Hartford to take charge of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum. With his wife Abigail Goodrich Whittlesey, he conducted seminaries at Utica and Canandaigua, New York. Abigail G. Whittlesey began publishing the Mothers Magazine, which she edited until about 1850. They had Samuel Goodrich who married Anna C. Mills and moved to Ceylon; Elizabeth Ely who married James W. Tillman; Henry Martyn who studied law at Yale, published his mother's magazine, and eventually removed to Detroit, Michigan where he was a military instructor and a quartermaster during the Civil War. He also collected material for a family history. Other children were Charles Augustus who died at sea at a young age, and Emily Chauncey who married Lucius Curtis, the minister at Woodbury and Colchester, Connecticut. He took a short trip to Europe, then served as acting pastor in Ripon, Wisconsin, and Lyons, Iowa, before settling in Hartford, Connecticut.
