Born in Salem, Mass., 15 July 1785. Served in the U.S. Army from 1811 to ca. 1823, from 1815 to 1819 as suttler at Fort Niagara, under Gen. William Gates. After his army service, he kept the Fort Niagara light in Youngstown, and was given charge of Fort Niagara for several months in 1826. He then kept a small public house and ferry at Fort Niagara until fall 1827.
