Bass Family.
The Bass family moved to Russell County, Ala. in about 1830.
Hartwell Bass was born in 1797 in Greensville County, Va., and died on his plantation, ten miles west of Ft. Mitchell, Ala., on the Old Federal Road, in 1843. He was a planter and large slave holder. He was married in 1825 to Elizabeth, daughter of Turner and Rebecca Moreland, in Georgia.
Demetrius Moreland Bass was born in 1834 and was raised on his father's (Hartwell Bass) plantation outside Ft. Mitchell, Alabama. In the late1850s he moved to Texas where he had a horse ranch. During the Civil War he was a member of a Texas Cavalry unit. He died in 1862.
Peter Alexander Greene was born in 1838 in Ellerslie, Harris County, Ga. and died while on a visit to Columbus, Ga., in 1902. During the Civil War he served as a private in Co. L, 6th Ala. Infantry and in 1862 he transferred to the 31st Georgia Infantry where he was elected a 2nd lieutenant and later promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1863. Greene was captured in 1865 Apr. 7 and was released in June of that same year. He married Martha Turner Bass, daughter of Hartwell Bass and widow of Peter's brother Stephen, in 1866. Greene was also an avid collector of historical materials.
