Isum Gwin was born 17 October 1826 in Harrison County, Indiana. His parents, Holmes and Mary Gwin, came to Indiana from Virginia before 1809. Isum Gwin eventually moved to Alfordsville in Daviess County, where he was a farmer. Gwin volunteered for the Union army on 9 August 1862, joining the 80th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, Company D. He mustered out of the army 22 June 1865 in North Carolina. Gwin married Louiza Mosier on 25 December 1870. He died 4 April 1907 in Shoals, Indiana.
