Lane College
Lane College was founded by Bishop Isaac Lane and the Tennessee Annual Conference of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church of America on Nov. 12, 1882 as the C.M.E. High School with 27 students and Miss Jennie E. Lane, daughter of the Bishop Lane, as its first teacher; the college department, which was organized in 1896, graduated its first class in 1906 with two students; name changed to Lane Institute in 1884 and to Lane College in 1896; approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1936 and was admitted into full membership in 1961.
