Born in Wilmington, N.C. in 1927. Enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Far East with the 674th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 1945-46. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army in 1950. Assigned to the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 1950. Served as Commanding Officer, Battery B & Service Battery, 28th Field Artillery Battalion, 1951-1952 and Adjutant, 8th Infantry Division Artillery, 1952. Received a law degree from Wake Forest University in 1953.
Served as Asst. Division Staff Judge Advocate, HQ, 34th Infantry and HQ, 24th Infantry Division, 1953-1954; Trial and Defense Counsel, Central Command, 1954-1956; instructor and administrator at the Judge Advocate General's School, 1956-59; Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Northern Area Command, 1960-1963; Asst. Chief, Career Management Division, Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Army, 1963-1966; Staff Judge Advocate, 1st Air Cavalry Division, 1966-1967 and HQ, U.S. Army Japan, 1968-1969; Chief, Personnel, Plans and Training Office, Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Army, 1970-1971; Executive, Office of the Judge Advocate General of the Army, 1971-1972; Staff Judge Advocate, XVIII Airborne Corps, 1972-1974; Chief Judge, U.S. Army Court of Military Review and Chief, U.S. Army Legal Service Agency, 1974-1976. Retired with the rank of Brigadier General in 1976.
