Webb, Sam Richard, 1913-
Members of the Webb Family of Albany, Texas represented in this collection are William Graham Webb (1879-1961), his children, and to a lesser extent, their children. The bulk of the correspondence and written works were created by William Graham Webb Jr. (1904-1977), who worked on a volunteer basis as a reporter covering local Albany events for the Albany News, The Abilene Reporter-News, and on occasion The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. The bulk of the printed material was collected by Sam R. Webb (1913- ) in conjunction with his involvement over the years with the Fandangle Association, the Albany Chamber of Commerce, The Albany Chapter of the American Legion, the Albany Dance Club, and the Albany High School Ex-Students Association. In addition Sam saved printed material about Fort Griffin State Park collected by William Graham Jr., and Sr.
In 1883, Sam Webb (I) (1855-1927) moved to Albany and set up a Real Estate and Insurance business with his father, General William Graham Webb (I) (1824-1902). It was called Webb and Webb. When William Graham Webb (I) died, Sam Webb (I) partnered with L.H. Hill to become Webb and Hill. Over the years the name changed many more times and Sam Webb (I) eventually got out of the business altogether. Later, his son, William Graham Webb (1879-1961) in partership with his own sons William Graham Jr., and Sam Richard founded a new Real Estate and Insurance firm in 1932. The business' name once again returned to Webb and Webb.
The Webb Family was very active in the Albany community. As such, this collection reflects their involvement with the following groups: The Ft. Griffin Fandangle Association, the Albany Chamber of Commerce, The Albany Chapter of the American Legion, the Albany Dance Club, and the Albany High School Ex-Students Association, and Ft. Griffin State Park.
With regard to the Ft. Griffin Fandangle, Graham Peterson Crutchfield (1889-1958) was integral in the development over the years of various technical aspects of the Fandangle, especially the steam calliope. His various personal records and photographs are in this collection as he was married to Virginia May Webb (1902-1983), daughter of William Graham Webb.
