Community activist Priscilla ("Pat") (Chase) Matsumiya was born in Newport, R.I., the daughter of Anita Bryant Johnson and Louis Rodman Chase. After graduating from Pembroke/Brown University in 1938, she married Howard DeVlieg; they lived in Detroit, Mich., and had three children. Her second marriage was to Yoichi Matsumiya. In 1970 she moved to Cambridge, Mass., and became involved in liberal politics working for the George McGovern campaign, the Cambridge League of Women Voters, and on many local issues. She was a research assistant for state senators Michael LoPresti (1984-1998) and Robert Travaglini (1993-1998). She died in August 2000.
