Born in Mainz, Germany 1873, died in Crompond, New York, USA 1958; bookbinder, anarchist, writer; member of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD); belonged to the opposition of D̀ie Jungen'; fled to Paris in 1892; member of the exile organization Unabhängige Sozialisten; went to London in 1895, where he became a member of the Gemeinde Ostjüdischer Anarchisten and editor of the Yiddish journal Der Arbeterfraynd; interned during the First World War; back to Germany in 1918; joined the Freie Vereinigung deutscher Gewerkschaften; intellectual leader of German anarcho- syndicalism; one of the founders and theorist of both the Freie Arbeiter-Union Deutschlands (FAUD) 1919 and the syndicalist International Working Men's Association (IWMA) 1922/23; emigrated in 1933 to the USA; continued to publish on politics and on cultural philosophical subjects; writer of Ǹationalism and Culture' 1937, etc.
