William Greenwell (1820-1918), archaeologist, was born at Greenwell Ford on 23 March 1820, and educated at Durham Grammar School and University College, Durham (B.A., 1839). He studied theology at the University College (M.A., 1843), and was ordained in 1844. Greenwell was appointed perpetual curate of Ovingham with Mickley, Northumberland, in 1847. He became a minor canon at Durham Cathedral in 1854, and librarian to the dean and chapter in 1862. In 1865 he was appointed to the living of Mary-the-Less, Durham, which he held until his death in the city on 27 January 1918. Greenwell was an authority on architecture and historical documents and objects.

Spencer George Perceval (1838-1922) was born on 8 July 1838. He was educated at Radley College, and entered Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in 1858 (B.A., 1862). He died on 7 May 1922.
