The 148th General Assembly appointed the Special Committee on Legal Procedure in 1936 to protect the Church's property rights in legal battles with schismatic groups arising in the 1930s. The Committee dealt with problems in both civil and ecclesiastical courts, conducting litigation on the Church's behalf and giving financial aid and legal advice to other judicatories involved in similar difficulties.
