Women's rights leader and social activist; involved in the League of Women Voters of Seattle and National Organization for Women (NOW) at the national, regional, and local levels, serving both organizations as an officer and committee and task force chair. Born Dorothy Young in New York, N.Y.; graduated from Swarthmore College where she met her husband Roger Sale; moved to Seattle from Amherst, Mass., in 1962 when her husband started teaching at the University of Washington. Already a member of the League of Women Voters (LWV), she transferred her membership to the Seattle chapter and became to be heavily involved with initiative elections and the civil rights movement. In 1972 she joined NOW and became active in the larger women's movement; worked on the LWV of Washington study of women's status in Washington; passage of the state Equal Rights Amendment (ERA); and lobbied for the state legislature's ratification of the national ERA Amendment in 1973. During that time she also worked for independent status for the Seattle Women's Commission and the Seattle Office of Women's Rights.
