Emanuel Leplin was born in San Francisco. While a student at UC Berkeley he won the Prix de Paris, and he studied music with Darius Milhaud. A violinist as well as a composer, he joined the San Francisco Symphony in 1942, and married Anita Shiner in 1943. The couple had two sons and lived in San Mateo, California. Contracting polio in 1954, Leplin continued composing music, and learned to paint with his mouth. He died in Martinez, California.
