Henry Bunbury, was the son of Sir Henry Bunbury (Britain's Under Secretary for War and the Colonies from 1809 to 1816), and began his military career at 18 with the 43rd Regiment. A subsequent promotion in 1833 to the 21st Regiment led to service in the Australian colonies (1834-1837).

Soldier and explorer. Arrived in WA in March 1836 as Lieutenant of the 21st Regiment stationed at York, Pinjarra and Busselton. Discovered the Bunbury district on a pioneer overland journey from Perth to the Vasse River settlement (later Busselton). Led a punitive expedition against Aborigines in the Avon Valley after the murder of white settlers there. Left WA in November 1837.
