Juan de Oñate (1549?-1624) was a Spanish explorer of the American Southwest. In the late 16th century, he claimed New Mexico for Spain, and became its colonial governor. He gained a reputation as a cruel ruler, and was eventually tried and convicted for misconduct against natives and colonists.
