Iowa Mothers Association (founded in 1960) was the sponsor of the Iowa Mother of the Year Award and the Iowa Young Mother award. Nominees who did not receive the award were recognized as Merit Mothers. Awards were conferred at the organization's annual meeting. One brochure in the collection states that the association's purpose is "to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundation of the home." The group was the Iowa affiliate of American Mothers, Inc. and included a group devoted to young mothers, the Iowa Young Mother Council Service. The Iowa Mother of the Year Award predated the formation of the Iowa Mothers Association as indicated by a list of winners which dates from 1938.
