Reynolds was born 11 March 1838, was reared in Selma, and attended school in Selma, Montgomery, Greenville, and the Georgia Military Institute. In the Civil War he was a member of the first Alabama "Partisan Rangers" also known as the 51st Alabama Mounted regiment, under Colonel John T. Morgan. Reynolds served as an orderly sergeant, first lietutenant, and captain. He was married three times. He first married Mary Jane Boyd on 30 April 1861. That marriage lasted until her death in 1890. They had eight children. He later married Mrs. Hattie Meredith and then married Mrs. Augusta Nelson.

After the war H. C. Reynolds and his family moved to Montevallo, Ala., where he was a partner in the mercantile business with William Boyd until 1897. In 1895 H. C. Reynolds became the first president of the Alabama Girls Industrial School, created in 1892, which later became the University of Montevallo. Reynolds resigned in 1899 and moved to Florida, where he died in 1920.
