Lorie, James Hirsch, 1922-....

James Hirsch Lorie was born on February 23, 1922 in Kansas City, Missouri to Alvin J. and Adele (Hirsch) Lorie. He received his A.B. (1942) and A.M. (1945) from Cornell University and his PhD from the University of Chicago (1947).

Lorie was a research assistant at Cornell University (1944-1945) and a member at a staff seminar on American Civilization in Salzburg, Austria (1947). He joined the faculty of the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business the same year he received his Ph.D. He was a professor of Business Administration (eventually becoming the Eli B. and Harriet B. Williams Professor of Business Administration) and associate dean (1956-1961).

In addition to those positions, Lorie served as director of the Center for Research in Security Prices (1960-); consultant for the division of research and statistics, board of governors, for the Federal Reserve System (1950-1952); and as consultant for the U.S. Treasury Department. He also was the director of Square D. Company of Park Ridge, Illinois; of Acorn Fund of New York, of Fundamerica of Japan, Vulcan Materials Company, and several other companies.

Lorie's publications include Basic Methods of Marketing Research (1951). Modern Developments in Investment Management: A Book of Readings (1978), and The Stock Market : Theories and Evidence (1985).

Lorie married Sally Rosen on June 16, 1948. They had one daughter, Susan, and divorced in 1953. Lorie married Nancy A. Wexler on June 19, 1958, but she died in 1966. He married Vanna Metzenberg Lautman on August 27, 1967. Lorie's stepchildren from his second and third marriages are Katherine Wexler, Jeffery Wexler, Erika Lautman, Victoria Lautman, and Karl Lautman.
