Henri J. M. Nouwen was born on January 24, 1932 in Nijkerk, Holland. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1957. He was on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame, the Catholic Theological Institute in Utrecht, Yale Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School, where he taught classes on psychology, Christian spirituality and ministry. He has written extensively on these subjects, having authored hundreds of articles, books, newsletters, pamphlets and papers. He continues to be a popular author and lecturer, and is highly respected for his knowledge and spiritual insight.
