Joseph C. Hinsey earned a Ph.D. in Anatomy from the Washington University School of Medicine in 1927. From 1924-1927, he was Assistant in the Department of Neuroanatomy and Histology and became an Assistant Professor following receipt of the Ph.D.

The chairman of his committee was Stephen Walter Ranson with Herbert Gasser and Joseph Erlanger representing his minors in physiology and pharmacology. In 1928, he went on to academic and administrative posts at Northwestern, Stanford University and Cornell University Medical College, and New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center. Sources: Amer.
