Clitherall, Elizabeth Burgwyn, 1784-1863

Caroline Elizabeth Burgwin Clitherall (1784-1863) was a plantation owner's wife and school teacher who lived in Belleville and Walterboro, South Carolina, at Thornbury Plantation in North Carolina, and in Greensboro, Tuscaloosa, and Mobile, Alabama. Her husband George Campbell Clitherall (d. 1829) was a planter and physician. The couple had six children: (1) Eliza Inglis Clitherall Moore (1802-1886); (2) Harriet A. Clitherall Spotts (1808-1834); (3) George Bush Burgwin Clitherall (1814-1889); (4) Frances King Clitherall Battle (1817-1849); (5) Madeleine Clitherall Battle (b. 1818); and (6) Alexander Baron Clitherall (1820-1869). She was the daughter of John Burgwin (fl. 1751-1800) and Eliza Bush Burgwin (d. 1787) of the Hermitage near Wilmington, North Carolina.
