James S. Epperson was born in Warring County, Kentucky on 4 February 1830. He married Caroline Boren in 1853 and by 1860 they were living in Gibson County, Indiana. Caroline died on 27 July 1861 and James enlisted as a lieutenant in the 80th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to captain in 1864 and mustered out on 22 June 1865. After the war he married two more times. He died on 20 May 1904 in Princeton, Indiana.
