Variant namesShip captain, of Prospect, Me., commanding bark J. Merrithew (by 1847) and ship Wellfleet (1861); in 1861 commissioned artillery captain of 6th Maine Battery, fighting in battles at Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Antietam, and others; promoted to major and eventually colonel; died of complications from wound received in action near at Deep Run, Va., 2 Sept. 1864.
