Holliston Mills established in 1893 when Herbert M. and Howard E. Plimpton established a company called Security Manufacturing Company on site of what would become Plimpton Press; name Holliston Mills adopted in 1895; engaged in the making of bookbinding glue as an adjunct to the next-door press company; by 1900, the company began making bookbinding cloth which would become its primary product; later it expanded to include the manufacture of window-shade materials, tracing cloths, and other products. In 1920 Holliston Mills was formally incorporated as a separate company from its parent, the Plimpton Press. After 1920 new plants were built in Kingsport and New Canton, Tenn., to be closer to the supply of cotton goods and eventually all plant operations were moved to Tennessee. In 1940 Thomas B. McCusker, who had worked for Holliston Mills for many years bought out the Plimpton Press assets in Holliston Mills in Norwood and East Braintree, Mass., and in Tennessee. McCusker died in 1960 but his family continued to run the plant. All active manufacturing in Norwood ceased in 1960 and production was moved to the Tennessee plant with only the executive offices remaining in Norwood. Name found as Holliston Mills, Inc.
