Cole, Jane P.
Vowles was born May 10, 1869 in Ontario(Canada). She moved to Manitoba in 1878. In 1884 the family came to Allegan (Mich.) She graduated from High School in Traverse City in 1887. Beginning in 1888, she taught in Mount Pleasant schools. She married Charles E. Vowles (d. 1958) in 1898. They had a daughter, Helen (born 1958). In 1961, Vowles School was named for her. She died at age 93 in April 1963. Jane Porterfield married Stephen P. Cole on Dec. 21, 1947 when he returned from service in World War II. The Clarke Historical Library also has a collection of his papers.
