Robert Harris was born in Melbourne and spent most of his life in Sydney. In 1973 his first book, Localities. In 1975 he won the Harri Jones Memorial Prize for Poetry. During the 1970s and 1980s Harris worked as an editor for New Poetry and also on Overland. His book, JANE, Interlinear and Other Poems won the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Poetry in 1992 and was shortlisted for the Kenneth Slessor NSW Premier's Prize for Poetry. He died in Sydney in 1993, aged 41.
