Cazenove Gardner Lee was born in 1850 to Cassius F. and Anne Eliza Gardner Lee. He attended the University of Virginia and became a lawyer. In 1881, he married Marguerite Lammot du Pont, a cousin. She was born in 1862, the daughter of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont and Charlotte Henderson. (Charlotte was one of Anthony Charles Cazenove's granddaughters). Cazenove and Marguerite settled in Washington, D.C., where they raised their two sons, Cazenove Gardner, Jr. and Maurice du Pont. Both sons graduated from Cornell and worked for the Du Pont Co. Cazenove Jr. married Dorothy Vandegrift.
When Cazenove, Sr. died in 1912, Marguerite sold their home and built a settlement house in the slums of Georgetown. After living their for ten years, she retired to a suite in the Powhatan Hotel. She and Cazenove Gardner, Jr. collected biographical information on members of the Cazenove, Henderson, and du Pont families.
