Upper Clyde Shipbuilders Ltd was established in 1968 through the linking of five Scottish companies; John Brown & (Clydebank) Ltd , Clydebank; Charles Connell & Co Ltd , Scotstoun; Yarrow & Co Ltd , Scotstoun; Alexander Stephen & Sons plc , Glasgow; and Fairfields (Glasgow) Ltd , Glasgow, following the recommendations of the Geddes Committee of Inquiry into the Shipbuilding Industry of 1965. With governmental approval, Yarrow & Co Ltd left the consortium in 1971. Upper Clyde Shipbuilders went into liquidation in 1972 .
