William Coates' family was from Patterson, New Jersey. He was a member of Company C, 1st regiment, N.Y. Volunteers during the Civil War, was captured and sent to Camp Parole, Maryland, where he was paroled. He moved to the Northwest after the war, worked as a steamship engineer, and lived in Portland, Oregon, and Spokane Falls and Cascades, Washington Territory. His siblilngs were Joseph Coates and Mary Houston, who was married to T.B. Houston. His wife was Nellie Fanning Coates.
