Lipman, Wynona Moore, -1999

Wynona M. Lipman, a Democratic Party politician, represented the 29th Legislative District in the New Jersey Senate, and became the first African-American woman to be elected to the Senate when she won her seat in 1971. Lipman's 27 years of service made her the Senate's longest-serving member at the time of her death in 1999. In the Senate, Lipman served on the Health, Education and Welfare Steering Committee, the Governor's Advisory Council on AIDS and on the Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. She served as Director of the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and as Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, National Council of Negro Women, Director of the State Urban Education Corps, Director of the Interracial Council of Business Opportunity, and was a member of the Order of Women Legislators and the National Black Caucus of State Legislators.
