The Appalachian Presbyterians Survey was commissioned by two denominations: the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America and the Presbyterian Church in the United States. The purpose of the survey was to "explore background factors influencing programs in Christian education in Appalachia." The survey was conducted by Hart M. Nelsen of Western Kentucky University's Department of Sociology.
