Women's National Indian Association of Washington, D.C.
The Women's National Indian Association was organized in 1882 as an advocate for the rights of American Indians. Formerly called the Indian Treaty-Keeping and Protective Association during the 1870s, the Association's name was changed to the National Indian Association in 1901. A Washington, D.C., auxiliary was formed in 1882; Harriet Ward Foote Hawley was a founding member of this auxiliary and served as its President from 1882 to 1886.
