Prior to 1956, Clemson cadets lived in dormitories under modified military discipline with dormitories divided into companies under the supervision of cadet officers responsible to the Commandant. Civilian students lived in dormitories under the general supervision of dormitory supervisors who were responsible to the Commandant. Married student housing consisted of 287 houses (prefabricated buildings) that had been constructed during World War II for training military personnel. In 1956, dormitories were under the supervision of dormitory supervisors who were responsible to the dean of student affairs. There was no housing for women who had to find other local accommodations. Fifty new two bedroom brick housing units were added for married students. The Office of Auxiliary Enterprises managed housing facilities and their financial operations. In 1963, there were eight men's dormitories capable of housing approximately 3,200 students, along with three married student housing complexes: Littlejohn Apartments, 50 two bedroom units in eleven buildings; East Campus Apartments, 100 two bedroom apartments in fifty buildings; and 247 two prefabricated buildings. The first women's dormitory opened in September with the capacity for 144 coeds. In 1966, eleven men's dormitories provided housing for 3,632 students; two women's dormitories each with a capacity of 144 coeds and a third of the planned 432 unit buildings nearing completion in 1968; also 127 prefabs available for married students, with a capacity of 277 units for married student housing.
In 1970, Manning Lomax, formerly Assistant Dean of Men in Student Affairs became Director of the Residence Hall Office in Student Affairs. Ernest Watson continued as Associate Director of Housing in the Office of Auxiliary Enterprises in Business Affairs. In 1978, University residence halls housed 5,354 students with 320 more residing at the Clemson House. There were 99 prefabs remaining as well as East Campus and Littlejohn for married students. In 1980, Business and Finance reorganized with Auxiliary Enterprises eliminated. Housing Office continued as part of Student Affairs, with 150 apartments provided for married students. The total residence hall capacity was 5,354 students. In 1989, Total student housing capacity was 6,865 with 3,448 male undergrads, 3,331 female and 82 grad students. In 1995, total student housing reduced to 6,435 as Johnstone Hall was demolished and reconstructed; with the Housing Office remaining within Student Affairs after the University's restructuring efforts.
