David S. Wise graduated from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1963. He received a B. S. degree in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1967 and an M. S. and Ph. D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin in 1969 and 1971. Wise held faculty positions at the University of Edinburgh, Oregon State University, and the University of Washington, in addition to the position of Senior Scientist at Tektronix Labs. He concluded his computer science career at Indiana University in 2010. Wise was an active member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), having served on its History Committee, Awards Committee, Audit Committee, US Public Policy Committee, Publications Board, and Special Interest Group (SIG) Board. He was especially active in SIGPLAN (the special interest group for programming languages). Wise received several ACM awards, including SIGPLAN's Distinguised Service Award and the Outstanding Contribution to ACM award, in addition to being appointed an ACM Fellow.
