Gustave Ernest Metz was born in Charleston, S.C., on December 15, 1907, the son of George and Elsie Metz. He graduated from Clemson College in 1927 and received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina, 1929. In 1929, Metz returned to Clemson College and served as an assistant registrar and mathematics instructor. In 1931, he took a leave of absence for more graduate work before returning in 1933. In 1935, Metz began his twenty-year career as a University Registrar. In 1955, Metz left the registrar's office to become secretary for the Board of Trustees and assistant to the president (Poole and Edwards). He held that position until 1964, when he left to become Dean of Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. He married the former Evelyn Daniel, daughter of D.W. Daniel.
