Parallax Magazine.

Hide Profile

In the Fall of 1960, a small group of students at Southern Illinois University, feeling the University and Southern Illinois to be in a "cultural lag," met to discuss the feasibility of establishing a magazine with an art/literature focus. Spearheaded by Publisher Frank H. Moreno, Southern Illinois University Carbondale Community Development graduate student, and Acting Editor Richard Kuroski, SIUC Department of Design student, this group formulated the foundation of Parallax magazine. Letters were written to nationally prominent artists and writers asking for support and material for the proposed publication (Pete Seeger declined an invitation to perform a benefit concert, but R. Buckminster fuller contributed material and financial support). From the outset, Parallax used a unique format, with each page of the magazine planned as a separate artistic design. Their varied selection of type and use of numerous printing effects made for a creative publication. Each issue was individualized, often with pages folding in or out, to accommodate special material. Plagued from the beginning by financial difficulties, Parallax tried to maintain its quality. In 1961, the magazine was awarded the certificate of merit Silver Medal Award in editorial publication and poster design by the Art Directors Club of St. Louis. This quarterly, fifty-cents-an-issue art form had begun to be noticed. By late 1962, financial problems had become critical. Having by this time lost 75% of existing subscriptions and being unable to secure sufficient advetising income, the staff reorganized. Experimental efforts to publish in the less expensive form of the five-cent Broadside and a portfolio called Illuminations selling for five dollars did little to slow the magazine's demise. The December 1963 number 7 issue of Parallax became the final edition of this artistic and literary magazine.
